  • Audit claims and invoices regularly: Perform routine audits of claims data and invoice details. Look for OON charges, their frequency, and associated fees to understand their financial impact. This visibility is essential for identifying cost drivers and holding your TPA accountable.
  • Negotiate or eliminate misaligned fees: Challenge percentage-of-savings fees by demanding caps, replacing them with predictable per-employee-per-month (PEPM) pricing, or removing them entirely. Also make sure that ongoing treatment at the same OON facility (e.g., dialysis) doesn’t incur repeat fees for the same service episode.
  • Choose a TPA with aligned, in-house capabilities: Work with a TPA that handles OON claims internally rather than outsourcing to an expensive third-party vendor that often charges high percentage-based fees.
